Lego avatars

You could choose a variety of clothes and accessories for your Lego avatar. Once we created our avatars, we had to screen capture them, copy them into our learning journal and then crop them so we could only see our avatar.

Fantastic Mr Fox written by Roald Dahl

Ladies and gentlemen, our reading group, Mike Teavee, has been reading the most fantastic book…. FANTASTIC MR FOX!! For the past two weeks we read it, it was about when these three crooks Bean, Bunce and Boggis wanting to kill Mr Fox because Mr Fox keeps stealing food from their farms. At the end of the story had a dinner feast. We all loved the book.  By Willow, Samantha and Shirley.

Te Reo Maori

At Bledisloe School every Wednesday a tutor named Hoani comes to our classrooms and teaches us Te Reo Maori. We learn the culture of Maori, the language and the stories. At lunchtime a special group of children go to the hall to sing songs and do chants. The Kapa Haka group performs and do shows to represent our school we are very proud and we hope to go very far with our Te Reo Maori.

Volley Ball

Over the past term we have been playing volleyball on Wednesday’s. We have two teams and they are coached by Mrs Harris and Miss Mills. In the games we have 3 different shots we use.

1-    Is the set where we have to get the ball to the other side creating a rainbow to the other side.

2-    Is the forearm pass, which we have to bend down low and we put our hands on top of each other and hit the ball with our forearm.

3-    The last shot is the spike we open our hands and hit the ball over the net. The spiker is also the target if another player from our team gets it to us and we spike it over and we get a bonus point.

We are playing really well and are really proud of our hard work and commitment.

Charlie and the

Charlie and the chocolate factory POP UP BOOK! This book was really funny because everyone laughed and enjoyed the humour of the book.  The book had amazing popup pictures and cool put out bits. Also we looked at these little songs. The funniest little song was this one about Augustus Gloop Augustus Gloop .The song went a little like this….

Term 1 Review

What a term it was a start to start all school years! The main highlight was camp of course (apart from the fact that we were dead tired when we got back home.) Also our class is now looking beautiful with our art up on our walls from the treaty posters to the Gavin Bishop art, our classroom is a masterpiece. We are nearing the end of our Roald Dahl unit with us completing a Roald Dahl matrix.

 Wow!! Our classroom is bright we have done so much art in term 1. Kimberley’s favourite art was the Kiwi Moon Art and her partner’s was the Treaty of Waitangi posters. We have just finished the poppy pictures they are looking great. We are working on exciting words, we get a boring word and think of exciting ones to use instead. We hope to do just as much art in term 2.

Poppy Art

This week room 13 have done poppy pictures to remember the A.N.Z.A.C’s who died in World War 1, 2 in Gallipoli and other places around the world.

We did the pictures by starting with painting the green grass then the blue sky and the clouds, poppies with the black dots and stems. With the poppies, we did the poppies large at first and did little dots of red at the back. On the back Mrs Colliss numbered the back 1 to 29 and put them in order so they form 1 cool, big poppy picture they look great on the wall. ByBen and Michael.       

Basketball 2012.

           This year the year 5/6 Bledisloe Boomers had an awesome start to their games! The team had practised from a Monday to Friday. The team played at the Centennial Hall in Napier. Our coach Mrs Dingle was awfully proud of how well we played throughout the term. The students in Room 13 who played are Foni, Te Manawa and me, Tyler. We are stunned of how well we’ve played throughout the term.    

Our busy week 9

After hours of labour, we have finished our fantastic Haiku Poems! A shortened account of some of the things that happened at camp. From eeling to the terrible weather to the (mostly) good cooking. There was a whole variety of topics.

A Haiku Poem is a short Japanese poem that does not rhyme, contains only 3 lines and follows the 5 - 7 – 5 formats. (5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line etc.)

This week Room 13 has finished their work on the Treaty of Waitangi. The last task that we had to complete was to identify the key attributes and qualities of the groups in New Zealand at this time and then justify our choices. The groups were Tangata Whenua, Missionaries, Whalers and Traders; some of the key attributes that each group showed were perseverance, and adaptability.  

Our Topic for the last two weeks of term will be ANZAC Day. We started off the unit by reading the picture book “ANZAC Day Parade’ by Glenda Kane and Lisa Allen. Our WALT is to be able to identify the traditions of ANZAC Day and why they exist. On ANZAC Day Janna and Felix will be representing Bledisloe School at the local ANZAC Day service.

Welcome, welcome ladies and gentleman to the famous poppy art museum. I’m Nicole and Shirley and we’re here to show you famous poppy art. These here show you what a class of year five and six students are capable of dong with the help of their great art teacher Mrs Colliss. Here are photos of the first few steps. Check out the blog next week for the finished art.

We have continued reading our Roald Dahl books this week, and most groups have nearly finished their books, depending on what group we are in we did different activities this week, some groups wrote Character Diaries, while others did PMI’s on the story, all groups have been doing Chapter Summaries. We are now doing a matrix of Roald Dahl based activities, some are to create, some are written plus many others. On our weekly trip to the school library a number of Room 13 students issued other Roald Dahl books to read at home.

For all of our art and other work displayed on the walls have been selecting the best presented piece, sometimes we vote and other times Mrs Colliss gets to select the piece. The best piece gets a star shaped with the words ‘Presentation award.’ The award lets people know who the class thinks the best piece is in that particular subject. Man, now I wish I’d put 100% in my art. I wish I could reverse time and retry. To late now!!!  By Troy.

The world was on the edge of their seats.

“Behold” bellowed a voice on all the TV’s in the world.

“The worlds first genetically modified flying penguin”

And then snow splattered the camera as the penguin took off flying and soaring.

The world froze in place, unfortunately that meant the nuclear powered ship heading for Antarctica crashed and thus resulted in a genetic modification to the penguin as the penguin transformed from non-flying to flying birds. This was created by a nuclear gene which is activated by the pressure of nuclear power. So they did what all nuclear gene gifted creatures do, they turned into a gigantic ugly nuclear, world first, genetically modified flying penguin. The nuclear gene made the penguin develop an interesting instinct to seek out all the world nuclear power plants, force then to melt down and ultimately plunge the world into a nuclear inters, where only the penguins survived.

Mufti Day/Wacky Hair Day

Today was mufti day at Bledisloe School, as well as wacky hair day. There was a large range of hair styles across the school, a lot of coloured hair spray.

To wear participate in mufti day you had to bring a gold coin donation which will be donated to Child Cancer Foundation. The school rose over $400!

We look a bit hot and sweaty because we had just completed a game of Capture the Flag against Room 14. It was for the chopping block, lucky for us we drew the game so are still the champions. 

ROALD  DAHL  READING.

We’ve finished our projects on Dr Seuss now we are moving onto Roald Dahl.

Each reading group is reading a different Roald Dahl book.

One group is reading ‘Going Solo’ (non-fiction).

Another is reading ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ (Rascally old chap).

‘Matilda’ (Smart but amazing) is being read by another group.

The final group is reading ‘Danny, Champion of the World’ (So amazing and brilliant).

We have been reading hard out! Each day, the groups decide how much they are going to read ready to discuss the next day.

MR  STINK

A few weeks ago we started reading a interesting book called ‘Mr Stink’ by David Walliams. Once we had finished the book we came up with a variety of activities that we could do related to the book, some were illustration and some writing. We had to choose one of each to complete as well as a book review.

We really enjoyed this story because of the humour the great characters. You may remember earlier in the year we read a book by the same author, ‘Gangsta Granny’ most people in the class preferred ‘Mr Stink’.

TREATY OF WAITANGI

This term we have been looking at the Treaty of Waitangi and the history behind it. Lately we have been creating posters which share the key messages that we gained from this unit, the two key words we have identified are Partnership and Protection.

Hey, do you like our Latest Masterpiece?

A few weeks ago we read a book Kiwi Moon by Gavin Bishop, which we based this art on.

It gave us the inspiration to create a collage using different art materials. We really enjoyed it because we go to fiddle around with paint to create the background of the moon and also for our long leaves. With water colour paint we created the backgrounds for our korus. We used dye outline our huhu grubs and pastel in the middle. It was heaps of fun!!!

Book Review:

We have been doing book review based on Dr Seuss. We’ve coloured a fantastic border with lots of beautiful colours and some with amazing pictures. We’re just finishing off Dr Seuss booklet and we are moving on to Roald Dahl.

Testing:

We went hard out on tests. Test here, test there, tests everywhere! Phew! I’m glad it’s all over!

I can’t believe Mrs Colliss had to squish it in all one week! We did maths, spelling, vocabulary and listening (listening is boorriinngg!!!!!!)  . Why now??? Why not in term two or three or even four when my brain switched on???? It took forever!!!! Wouldn’t want to get in the way of them flying my way!!!

Landscapes:

We have been finishing our wonderful artwork based on a specific area at the Harris farm. The forms of mediums we used were charcoal, 4B pencils and the normal HB pencil. We stuck them on black paper and they look fantastic.

Last week, the senior school went to camp. The camp was at Mrs Harris' farm. The few days were filled with highlights, here is a quick overview of what we got up to...

Hi, its Ben and Felix here, we are going to talk to you about the NZ army coming to visit us at camp and first of all we got to touch dismounted weapons. We got to hold a AUG red dot sighted gun, AUG agog sighted and a AUG agog sighted gun with a grenade launcher connected onto it and other weapons were a light and heavy SMGs and my personal favourite was the bazooka( rocket launcher.) All of these dismounted guns were real but could not shoot and had no ammo. Then we saw and got to mess around with an Austrian made, fully armoured vehicle with a 50 calibre mounted machine gun (MMG for short.) We got to crawl all over the vehicle (Tommy got to fire the last fake bullet) it was ultimo skill and got to touch bullet proof army packs and other stuff this was a cool experience thanks NZ army, Ben and Felix out.    

We did a rotation of art, writing and orienteering. We did some cool drawing using these little view finders, drawing the landscape around us. Next we did some orienteering. It’s when we had to get to your destination with your compass. Lucky last was writing recipe of courage, e.g. 1 cup of kindness etc. – Te Manawa and Tyler

At dinner time on the first night we had to cook with an open fire. We cut a rectangular hole in the ground and collected sticks and wood, to get our fire started. We cooked walking tacos , they tasted better than tacos at home!!! Written by Fallon and Kassie

AAAAAHHHHH!!! His head is cut off. The eel is slippery it was back and yellow we cooked it on a barbecue on the second day. It was juicy and yummy. By Pasa and Tommy.

At the start of the gorge walk we jumped through a fence and started walking up the track. We came to a little cliff with stairs for us to walk down as we got further down the track two dads snuck of and hid behind a bush. As we got near the bush they were behind they jumped out at us and gave us a massive fright.  By Kimberley and her partner

Masterchef - Wow! What a mission we had to cook in groups one person from each from each group had to choose a numbered bag of ingredients. We had to cook with a mini gas cooker. We had up to 6 ingredients in our bag including 2 sausages per person in our groups. The winners were Alannah’s group from room 14. Written by Angala and Shirley

Mountain biking down the hill was challenging and fun. On the second day Mrs Harris' daughter Laura came and took some kids on a mountain bike track. I crashed and my bike flipped but I managed to stay on. One person used his front brake too much and crashed. He hurt his elbow but luckily one kind person helped him and had to walk the rest of the way.

During free time people rode on the mountain bikes on a track made by a group of boys and Mr Harris on the first day.    Written by Sam and Troy.

Wow wee you wouldn’t believe the mayhem Mrs Colliss went through to help us the tents set up. There was a massive range of sizes from Bens two man tent to Kimberley huge tent that housed 13 people!  It was tiring work!  By Nicole and Caitlyn

Go through the lava pit only recourses are boulders to go past. Lead your blind sheep into the pen without talking with real words or holding them. Get out of a human tangle and form a circle holding hands for all of these tasks you needed co-operation. By Willie and Humo

On the second day of camp, my teacher gave to me, permission to build a tepee with Jonathon, Jessie & Ben .First we had to gather wood for the tepee, which meant riding the A.T.V (with Mark A.K.A. Mr Harris) for half of the morning to a little forest on the farm. Using a chainsaw, we obliterated Mother Nature’s creation and went back to camp (with a few hiccups on the way e.g. getting stuck in the mud) When we arrived back we tied the poles together (most of the credit goes to Ben and Robo) and lifted it up to create the masterpiece (I had a little incident which resulted in my nickname: Photon! Ben said that I was smarter than most of the adults and I proved it by asking them what a Photon is and as I predicted, they didn’t know).For those lesser scientific beings, a Photon is what light is made of.

So today was the night of the “CAMP CONCERT” and we were feeling rather shy. We had to work together and co-operate really well and create a performance that wasn’t boring! Suddenly when the show started every group went through their performance with dancing, singing , plays, comedy, and loads more…. By Janna and Maxine

Our first real blog entry for 2012

Today’s blog entry is brought to you by Ben, Angala, Michael, Felix, Ocean and Kassie.

At the start of the term we began a Dr. Seuss booklet of work as part of our author study. Mrs Colliss brought in a box full of his books; my favourite book was the ‘Grinch that Stole Christmas’. The whole class loved the booklets and enjoyed the learning involved.

In the booklet there were lots of activities involving Dr Seuss, like a chart which showed the books we read, a drawing sections were you drew your favourite character…

A quiz section and my favourite part, which was the adapted poem. I wrote a Voldemort rap, featuring Harry Potter. – Ben.

We started off the year with an awesome shared book. Mrs Colliss had been recommended the book ‘Gangsta Granny’ by David Walliams. It had been short listed for the ‘Roald Dahl Funny Prize’ so we knew it was going to be a winner.

It was an exciting story about school boy Ben and his granny, who was an international jewel thief…

We all thoroughly enjoyed it, so much that we are now reading another book by the same author, ‘Mr Stink’. We’ll tell you about that one soon.

 At the start of the term we made a writers notebook. We did a title page and some of us used lettering books to make them look awesome. On the next page we created a collage, cutting out magazine pictures and photos, which we based on things we liked. We did a list of the things we love as well as a list of things we dislike. We have recently added a page about things we wish for and one other page called things we would save. We add to these when we have any spare and time and have finished all our other work. 

We created these notebooks so if we are stuck for writing ideas; we have heaps of ideas in our book. The overall theme of the notebooks so far is ourselves. – Kassie.

I am going to tell you all about our passion wall. A passion wall is a wall displaying the top three things that each member in the class is truly passionate about. The most people put soccer as their number one passion, the second most popular was videogames. – Michael.

At the start of the year the first piece of art we did was our sea creatures. Everyone enjoyed it because we got to choose any sea creature we wanted. First we used chalk to create the outline, we used pastel to colour our creature, background and border. The last step was to use black dye, which dissolved the chalk and created a black outline. Don’t they look flash! – Angala

Throughout the week we have been reading a picture book, Stellaluna. It’s about a baby bat that got attacked by a ferocious owl, she fell in a birds nest and got taught how to behave like a bird. Stellaluna found this hard. At the end Stellaluna is reunited with her mother. Room 13 found this story really enjoyable and learnt interesting facts about bats and the life lesson we took from the story was, ‘don’t change the way you are.’ – Ocean.

Next week we are heading off to camp. We have been very excited get prepared. In class we have been very busy doing camp activities, sorting groups and going over the expectations. It’s going to be great!
