Coding

In room 13 this week we have had a go at coding. Mr D sent Mrs Colliss a link so she thought we could all have a go and see what it is all about.

This is the website we used... http://studio.code.org/

Author Visit

Today we had a visit from New Zealand author Stacy Gregg. She writes books about horses and ponies. She has written and published 19 books and at the moment is writing her 20th. While she was here she talked about how she got all of her ideas and how she has travelled the world to get ideas for her books. She was a great story teller and we all really enjoyed it, especially me! I got my copy of her latest book signed. It was the highlight of my year!!!

Art with Mrs Harris

Today Mrs Harris came into our class to do calendar art with us. We were inspired by one of her pieces of art.

We used vivid and oil pastel to create these masterpieces. We took our time and put heaps of care to make sure these were our best work. There were two new colour words we learnt, complementary, which means colours opposite each other on the colour wheel, and analogous, which means colours beside each other.

Families can buy calendars, cards, diaries and note pads featuring our art work.

Geometry Art

For maths this term room 13 has been doing geometry – 2D and 3D shapes. Part of this unit involved us using protractors to measure angles and using compasses to draw perfect circles. Today we combined these skills to draw these stars and flowers. For some people they were a lot harder than they looked and for others they found it quite easy. They look cool altogether.

Combining art and maths we created these drawings of 3D shapes. We had to make sure that the lines that were meant to be straight were and the curved lines were carefully drawn. Once we had done the outlines we started to do the shading, we had to think about where the light would be hitting the shape. We used special drawing pencils so when we had finished we carefully used water on a paint brush to have a water colour effect.

Origami Creations

For the second week of term 3 we attempted to make orgami cranes during maths. For home learning we were set the mission to try and creation other origami pieces. Some creations worked out really well and some didn't. There was a range of different origami creations, such as cups and flying cranes to bunny rabbits in boxes. They are now on display on the back table.

Matariki, Art and Kiwi Sport

Kiwi Sport
On Tuesday we arrived at Park Island ready for adventure. We competed in 3 different sports, these were; Soccer, t-ball and hockey. We were in 8 teams, which we the same as the soccer field day and fitness teams.
We came across different teams from different schools in our area.
Teams had mixed results, but everyone had a great day. Thanks to the parents who helped out.

ART WITH RAE

On Wednesday we were lucky enough to have Rae Hendry in our class taking art. The art that we did was based on the stars of Matariki. She showed us pieces of art from other artists, these were our inspiration.

We each had an A3 star and access to warm and cold primary coloured paint as well as black and white paint.

First we had to draw our design on the star. Then we painted our background, if we wanted different colours we had to carefully mix them. Once the background was painted we had details using a smaller brush.

Once they were dry we carefully cut them out and put them onto black paper.

They look very unique; every one of them is different.

MATARIKI

On Thursday night we had our school Matariki evening. First we meet together in the assembly and sung two Maori songs as a school. Then Mrs Bevis shared what was happening in each of the classes. Families were free to move around the classes and complete the different activities. Some of the activities were; flax weaving, paper stars, kites, thousand stars in chalk and a story of Matariki. Outside there were braziers where you could toast marshmallows. At the end we all meet together and released Chinese Lanterns.

It was a very cold but great night.

Faraday Centre Visit

Over the last 2 weeks the senior classes have visited the Faraday Centre as part of their topic, Machines and Inventions.

We got to use an old Maori hand drill. You had to carefully twist the strings and hold them between you thumb and finger, then gently but quickly pull them in and out, while pushing downward. It was tricky to start with but easy once you got the hang of it.

Another stand out activity was the Leonardo Da Vinci Bridge. You had to carefully construct the bridge which is made only of sticks, no nails or anything! It was strong enough that we could walk over it.

Food for Thought

Last week the seniors participated in the healthy eating programme, ‘Food for Thought.’

We had a nutritionist, Nova, come in and teach us about the food pyrimad and we looked at the labels on food and learnt how to read them.

On Wednesday we visited the supermarket and completed a range of activities based around different food groups and the healthiness of them.

It was great fun and we learnt how to make healthier options with our eating.

Little bits of vanilla ice-cream can be good.

This group is finding what bread is healthy everyday bread and what is occasional bread.

Mmmmm, yummy snacks, but are they healthy?

In this photo this group is trying to read the labels of fizzy drinks to see how healthy they drink are.

Zoe, Ruby, Te Ahu and Nick are looking at the drinks sections finding what's healthy and what's not!

This group is looking in the dairy section to find out what is the healthiest product and what is the least healthiest.

They got thirsty while studying the milk. Nanoka is looking to see which is the healthiest milk.

They were licking their lips while studying the food. Unfortunatley they discovered it is unhealthy and in the eat least group.

At the supermarket we had to find at least 5 fruit and 5 vegetables in each colour section. The colours were Red, Yellow/Orange, Brown/White, Green, and Blue/Purple.

Seth's stop go drawing

My video was created on an app called Stop Motion Studio.
It was fun making this little video thing to test out the new app.
I used a drawing book and took a photo of each step. Sometimes I forgot to take photos so I had to go back a step, because you have to take a photo of each step. You had to start off with basic shapes, mostly circles.
Hope you like my little video.
Thanks,
Seth

ANZAC Ceremony

On Monday the 14th of April, 10 children went with Mrs Bevis and Mr Papuni to an Anzac ceremony at Clive Square Memorial Garden, to place white crosses in the ground in memory of the soldiers that sacrificed their lives in World War 1.

22 schools participated in the event. Each one of us were given 1 of the 208 white crosses to place in the ground. The 208th cross was in memory of all the unknown soldiers.

The children that went from our school were: Kayla, Isabelle, Declan, Kayla CM, Te Ao, Corban, Kiki, Thomas, Eloise and Detroit.

It was very heart touching and we were all very honoured to be there. We had to hold the cross on an angle with our left hand on the top and our right hand on the bottom of the cross. Each of the crosses had a name on it in memory of that soldier. Two of the names that our school got were C Williams and G Whittle.

We had a great time, though the weather was terrible, but we figured the soldiers in the war would have to fight in rain for years on end.

Lego animation

Kairon, Anthony and Justis created this stop go animation using lego and the lego movie app. It was their first go at something like this and filled in some wet lunchtimes. Haven't they done a great job!

Cupcake Auction

Mrs Colliss made cupcakes for us to bid for, they looked so yummy!

We are bidding for some cupcakes, they were really expensive! The price went up in 10s, up and up until no one could bid anymore. People would bid over 100 bleds* for the cupcakes, some went for only 30 bleds. One of the cupcakes was sold for $136, way too expensive for me! Not everyone got a cupcake, we need to save up and hopefully next time well get one.

You could buy more than one if you had enough money.

*Bleds are our fake money at Bledisloe School. We get them for doing the right thing, we then get to spend them on really cool stuff.

G.A.T.E is a group of 13 amazing, talented children. From room 13, Kayla and Zoe attend. Every Wednesday we go to the Think Tank from 9:30 to 11:30. We are redeveloping the front garden so everyone can go in and on it. Lots of parents have helped, supported and encouraged us by donating and loaning us things we need. In the garden so far we have painted, placed and concreted our ginormous pencils, concreted our pavers and concreted our noughts and crosses pavers. The pencils are placed in the rainbow between two trees. They are about 1.5m tall each. In spring we are going to plant a willow tree tunnel, plus ground cover.
Next week we are doing some final touches and we will restart in spring when the weather is suitable for planting. We will post more photos when we add more to the garden.

ANZAC POEMS

As well as creating our poppy art (see previous post) we wrote some ANZAC cinquain poems.

To write them correctly the first line has one word that states the poem topic (Le Quesnoy). The second line has 5 words which each have something to do with the poem topic, the next line has 4, then 3, then 2 the last line has the main topic (ANZAC/Survivor/Soldier).

Once we had finished writing and we were happy with the poem, they were typed up and printed. We then decorated them with pencil drawings that related to the poem. We then backed them on either red or black cardboard.

They look great on the wall altogether.

Farm Inspired Art.

In groups we all wrote about our latest artwork.

Room 13 have made a farm based piece of art. It includes sheep, hills and trees. We also did a black border, it looked pretty good with our art. The art was based on our topic and camp, then thats when the art came in. Paige enjoyed making the sheep, Nanoka liked it all and Amber liked doing the apples.
By Paige, Nanoka and Amber.

For our inspiration we came back from camp and did an internet search for farm art. For topic we are doing From Paddock to Plate, which is about farming. We found an image that we liked, but we didnt find out the artist.  We just finished them and they look fantastic. They were actually easy to create because we did them step by step.
By Nick, Bryce and Javarn.

The first part we drew was the hills in pencil. We did this step by step and talked about where each hill could start. Then we added in the outline of the trees. Some parts we didnt draw in pencil before we painted them, like the clouds.
By Tahlia, Micayela and Jack.

While doing the hills we painted them curved because the hills on our inspiration were curved. We jumped the paint brush up and splodged it down neatly. After the hills we drew the trees (3 were circles and 3 were carrot shaped.)
After that we did the clouds with candle wax. We used it because it made the paper waterproof and when we painted the sky orange the clouds stood out. Some of us had to add some white to make them stand out a bit more. We painted the trees dark green and then used the splodge technique to add some lighter green.
Next we painted the border black and used a careful straight technique (The Mrs Colliss technique).
Next we cut out the sheep and painted then a skin colour and white. We glued these on and drew the faces and legs.
By Nand, Blake and Logan.

We made cute (or ugly) sheep for our art. We for some paper and made a cloud shape. Next we painted the clouds a fleshy colour with white patches and then we stuck them onto our art with PVA glue. Then we painted a tuff of wool where the top of their head would be. Next we used a grey-ish colour for the face. Then we used a barbeque stick to make the tiny eyes. After that we ended up with some fantastic sheep.
By Seth, Kairon and Daniel.

When we do our painting of the border the class was using either the Bryce technique or the Mrs Colliss technique. The Bryce technique is when you go rough and it goes over the line and it is a little bit messy and the paint brush spreads out. Then Mrs Colliss technique is when you are doing it slowly and smoothly and you guide along the line. When you guide along the line you dont use too much paint, otherwise it will go over the lines. Ashley and Sasha both did the Mrs Colliss technique, Ruby started doing it the Bryce way but changed to the Mrs Colliss way.
*Bryce was happy to have his method shared, he has now changed to the Mrs Colliss technique ;)

By Ashley, Sasha and Ruby
The first tools we used for our art were a ruler, pencil and eraser to make the border. Then we drew the hills and painted them with red, green and yellow/orange paint. Then we used pencil to draw 3 large circles for the trees. Then we drew 3 medium sized carrots for the other trees. We used candle sticks to draw 5 clouds in our sky and painted over them with yellow paint for the sky. Then we painted the trees green. Next we painted the border black. We got small pieces of paper and used scissors to cut out 3 sheep. We painted them a peach colour. We used PVA glue to stick the sheep onto our art. Then we used a skin colour to do the fluffy head of the sheep and added the face and the ears, we used a kebab stick to paint on the tiny eyes. We then painted 10 apples on our big trees.

By Zoe, Isabelle and Kayla.

These are the steps that we did to create our artwork.
First we did our border and hills in pencil. Next we painted 3 green hills, 3 red and 3 orange hills.
Next we painted the sky and the clouds. The sky was yellow and had a little bit of white mixed in for the clouds.
We drew 3 big circles and 3 pointy trees. We painted these green.
We cut out the cloud shaped sheep and painted these.
Then we put the apples on the apple tree and added the tree trucks.

By Michael, Te Ahu and Anthony.
