Shields

We created these shields which represent ourselves. First on our shields we did our draft we have to select symbols that represent ourselves. We drew them in pencil then outlined with vivid, then we used pastel to colour in the pictures, next we dyed the background of our shields, each of the 4 segments a different colour. Then we cut strips of tinfoil and glued it onto the edges on our shields to make it look like metal. Then we stapled the handle on the back, this made them curved and look more interesting, plus gave us something to hold.

 

Special Assembly

This morning we had a special whole school assembly for Ms Bevis, welcoming her as the new principal. Mr Turfrey was there to present a special gift to Ms Bevis, a tuki, it is a dark greenstone necklace, and the shape of it represents building new things. The whole school sung a special song that we learnt for the event and the school song. School families and Ms Bevis’s family was there to watch the special event.

Reading Groups

Last week we started our reading groups, each group is named from a house from Harry Potter. The groups are Slytherin, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Griffindor.

One group is reading Trash and doing a literacy circle, they will tell you more about this later.

 

The other three groups are reading smaller novels focusing on making text to self-connections.

 

Room 13 are gardening!

Last week we decided that we were going to help with the management of the gardens at school, especially those outside our class rooms.

We talked to Mrs Makene who had a similar idea and had talked to the city council about putting our plan into action.

A parent has donated a worm farm to the school, so Caleb and Humo were given the job to research the worm farm and what they can actually eat and how they work. They are currently working on this to share with the class.

Anna and Kimberley are researching compost bins and finding out about what can go in those, they are also gathering the information to share with the class. We are looking forward to the arrival of some special compost bins that have been ordered.

Seth and Te Ahu were given the task to find out a bit more about pig buckets, as we already have these in the school.

Isabel, Nikita, Nick and Bryce headed outside and had a sort through the garden and pulled out any items that were no longer suitable (dead or gone to seed).

Kayla, Chloe, Micayela, Ethan, Anthony, Shohei and Isabelle started sorting through the books in our class, noting down interesting websites and beginning to find out what plants we can plant.

We are all very excited and have brainstormed some really cool ideas of what we want to achieve.

Te Reo and Tryathlon

Te Reo Maori

On Wednesday we had our first Te Reo Maori session with Hoani for 2013. We started off by doing introductions e.g.

Then we made a list for all the Maori words for family members, this allows us to add more lines to our pepeha.

Then we did the kapa haka, we sung the songs that we knew from last year. Ethan and Nikita picked up the words and actions really fast (they are new to our school).

Hoani was really proud of us because we worked really well for the first time this year and we displayed the 3R’s (Respect, Resilience and Responsibility.)

Ethan and Nikita shared the star of the week and both received a Maori sticker.

Te Ahu at the Kiwi Kids Tryathlon

On Wednesday Te Ahu was away because he was at the kiwi kids triathlon. It was a big event at Frimley Park in Hastings, with nearly one thousand kids participating.

The three events that he had to do were swimming, biking and running.

Seth and Sam asked Te Ahu what his must challenging moment was.

Te Ahu told them “It was the waiting, you had to be really patient, which was hard because I was excited, everyone was bored!”

There were 7 age groups, each had a different coloured cap and stickers so you could tell them apart and the group they were in. 

The youngest competitor was 6 the oldest was 15.

Te Ahu enjoyed his day, especially the running. He hopes to do it next year and is trying to convince his mates to enter.

Welcome to 2013!

Bio Poems by Isabel and Anna

In the first week of school we wrote a poem called a bio poem, which is all about ourselves. We wrote a draft and then later we published them on the school laptops. We took a ‘selfie’ of ourselves using the iPad and then inserted them into our poems; we then had to alter the photo so they were black and white. Now they are on the wall looking spectacular.

Monday the 10^th of February was the first time we swum as a class. During the first lesson we showed Mrs Colliss our best swimming so she could put us into groups. Once we got back to class we came up with our group names.

1.     Sharks

2.    Stingrays

3.    Silver Sharks

4.    Clams.

On Tuesday we were in our groups and started to work on our breathing and our freestyle technique.  Tuesday was a great day because every single person remembered their togs!

 

 

 

Studyladder by Te Ahu and Tommy

We have started working on the website studyladder.co.nz. We each have own account, our username is three letters of our first name then some random numbers. Our password is a random computer generated word. We can customise our avatar and bedroom by earning points, you earn the points by completing learning tasks that Mrs Colliss has set for us. We are all excited to get on there and start earning points. This is part of our home learning and sometimes we will do it during class time.

About Us Posters by Ethan and Caleb           

One of our first activities this year has been our About Us Posters, these are posters all about ourselves. We filled out all our details on the posters (nothing too personal!). The types of information we included are our favourites, our family, hobbies etc. Using the iPad we took silly pictures and printed them out so we could insert them on our posters. At the top of our page there is a scroll, in here we wrote our name and decorated it. They are now up on our wall for everyone to read and learn about each other. Surrounding them are words that describe the members of Room 13.

Welcome to Room 13 2013

We are about to start an exciting new year of learning!

On the first day back (4/2/13) students will head to their 2012 classes.   We will all go to a whole school assembly where the students will find out their 2013 classes. We will then head to class, begin to get to know each other and start our exciting year!

Room 13 students will receive a notice in the first few days which will give information about the class blog and have a slip for parents to fill in allowing their child’s first name, photo and work to be included on the blog.

Optimist Yachting

 

Last week the year 6’s got an opportunity to get involved with Optimist Yachting.

Everyday a group of year 6’s went down to Pandora Pond. Half of the year 6’s went on Monday and Tuesday and the other half went on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday a few lucky people got another chance to go.
When we arrived at the pond the first job was to get changed into our warm sailing clothes and put our bags safely away. Then we went through the safety checks, these were:

1.         Ears

2.        Lifejacket

3.        Bungs

4.        Centre board clip

5.        Mast clip

6.        Rudder clip

7.        Hat!

The reason we didn’t have to set them up was because Greenmeadows used them in the mornings. Except for Friday when they didn’t go and we set them up and packed them up.

Room 13 were proud to be involved in the first capsize in 3 years! Maxine and Kassie had a bit of a fall when they misbalanced their boat, spun around and tipped.

“It was freezing, but we just clung onto our boat until rescue came, Mrs Colliss talked us through what to do and Mr Anderson swum out and turned our boat over. Then we had the long (and boring) job of bailing it out” recalled Kassie and Maxine.

This all happened on Tuesday and we couldn’t blame them because the wind kept changing direction which made sailing difficult.
Over the course of the week, everyone’s skills improved as they completed the challenges.
Thank you to all the parents that came and provided transport and supervision.
We had an awesome experience and we are looking forward to doing it again at intermediate.

PrEP MARKET DAY!

Today we had our PrEP market day. PrEP stands for the Primary Enterprise Programme. Everyone in years 3-6 were involved in the selling process.

Over the last few weeks we looked at how businesses are run, examples of services and products, the consequence of taking out loans, how to budget and making smart choices. Over the course of the year we have been collect bleds (Bledisloe currency) to be able to buy supplies at the prep store and rent items to create products and services to sell today. We could spend our bleds at the market and the year 2’s also came to shop, Mrs Harris even gave the teachers some spending money.

There was an excited buzz in the air as people arrived this morning. Everyone had been counting down to this day all year. In fact it was one of the first things we told Mrs Colliss when she started. Some of the year 5’s have even started thinking about what they will do next year, now that is thinking ahead! The year 6’s are disappointed that this is their last year for PrEP

Pop-up Christmas Cards – Janna, Angala, Samantha and Shirley.

Shortly we are going to count up all our takings, hopefully we have made a profit, and not a loss. We just have to remember to pay back loans and subtract our expenses.

It was an awesome day!!!

Fallon meets Valerie

After the bell rung after lunch today (Friday) a small group of very lucky Bledisloe students got to walk over to Paper Plus to meet Valerie Adams. Fallon was lucky enough to be the Room 13 representative. After joining the long line they got to the front and were greeted by her strong, powerful handshake. Fallon got to place that precious gold medal in her hot little hands. Mrs Dingle purchased her newly released book for the school and Valerie signed it and wrote ‘To Bledisloe School’ making it a very valuable addition to our school library.

What we've been doing

Rocket Art

On Thursday 25^th October the senior classes had an art day. Room 13 started off in 14. First and we designed our own rockets on paper, then we had to cut out the base shape of our rocket using coloured paper of our choice, next we cut out the nose cone and the fins on the side. The next thing we had to do was measure the width of the rocket and make the thruster (the bottom bit). We added a port hole and a little alien/ spaceman and added glitter for the exhaust fumes. Then we had to get even more creative, we created our own planets for decoration.

Now they are hanging neatly on our windows, they look sparkly and amazing!

Hot Air Balloons

In week 2 we made pictures of hot air balloons. First we made the clouds’ with a white pastel. Then we made the straps to hold the basket to the hot air balloons with a vivid. The next stage was to add the balloons. The final step was to dye the page and to not get it on the clouds. We then write on it where we wanted to travel.

Printing

In room 12 we did printing with Rae Hendry. First we got a polystyrene plate and with our pen/pencil we pushed so hard so it will make a dent. Then we drew a picture of a bird. Next we went to a ink table there was four colours black, yellow, orange and red. We rolled over it with a clean roller. When we thought it was done we took the piece of paper off and the bird was printed on the paper. After that we could add a background if we wanted to. The next day in room 13 we presented them on the wall.

Giant Butterfly

On art day in room 13 had a giant butterfly with lots of pieces to colour in. The senior classes coloured in pieces of the butterfly after they had finished their balloon art. We coloured it in with pastel then we put all the pieces together like a puzzle and put it on display.

Chess Tournament 

   

On Friday the 26^th of October some people went to the chess tournament. It was at the Hastings Sports Centre. When we got there we all got a different number on our hand. The first number was what year you were, the second number was your starting table number. We got a draw so you knew who you were facing, and told if we were going to use black or white chess pieces. Over the course of the day we all played 5 games of chess, each one was 20 minutes long. It was a great day. The most successful Bledisloe person was Humo who won 4 games out of 5 games.

Tyler’s badge

On Monday 29^th of October, Tyler Brown got called up in assembly to get special badge because she was the first person in the school to get 10 CBG’s.  A C.B.G is a ticket which get when you are caught being good in the playground. It gets recorded on a chart in each class. When you get 5 you get a certificate and 10 gets you the badge that Tyler go today.

“I felt excited and proud’’ said Tyler.

Term 4 Sports

At the end of term 3 we had a meeting about the sports in term 4 and what sports we wanted to play. The sports were Cricket, Basketball and Vollyball.

This term we are doing Athletics in class P.E. We are split up into 4 ability groups and we rotate around each station. The stations are softball throw, high jump, long jump and running. We are training towards the interschool athletic tournament.

I SPY

Today we started planning our I SPY books which we are going to start creating next week.

They are based on the popular I SPY books that we all love to read and search for items.

We are working in pairs and we could select our own theme for our photo. Our job over the next few days is to start collecting bits and pieces which fit our selected theme and will be able to be included in our photo.

 

This cool website allows you to create you own pictures online and write the matching rhyming sentence. Great practice because our photos will have a sentence in a similar format to the books.

Study Ladder

Today we started back at school for the first day of term 4!
Wow the year has gone fast!

Over the holidays Mrs Colliss signed us up to the website

We each got our own log in and when we sign into the account we can do activities that Mrs Colliss has assigned to us. When we complete the activities we gain points which we can then spent in the game.

We just had a look at it today and checked we could sign in and then tonight we can go onto the site and begin the activities. @e will have some time at school to work on the activities.

A good part of this website is Mrs Colliss can see when we logged in and then see who has gained the most points.
